Samson’s Take: Kojo, Dame, President, promote RTI, punish violations

The RTI Commission is back in the news for all the right reasons. Like me, many were disappointed at its verdict affirming the presidency’s decision to refuse to disclose cost of the president’s profligate charter-plane travels. Well, now he has stopped, but after those expensive travels, some unnecessary have cost the country dearly. Just how is the nation or the president’s security in danger by mere disclosure of the cost of those private jet flights? Flights which are now a matter of public knowledge, thanks to the investigative MP for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

Samson’s Take: CJ Sophia Akuffo calls for action

She has won a million hearts. Yes, even many on the lunatic fringe for the senseless duopoly partisan politics cannot help but love her.

Yes, even those who called her names over the errant conduct of the infamous Montie-3 are celebrating her. She spent over thirty years writing judgments, and over twenty of those years in the Supreme Court resolving disputes, shaping national policy and developing Ghana law.

Samson’s Take: AG Dame misses it, dims light

Godfred Yeboah Dame, the youngest occupant of the Office of Attorney-General and Minister for Justice has, in the last two weeks, dimed the light on his shining performance. I have done only a couple of cases with him on the other side before and in his present office.

Many lawyers will confess he is simply good at his game, and feel proud that he is the man at the helm.

Samson’s Take: Overwhelming mistrust for police, justified?

You may have seen the video of the West Hills Mall incident that has dominated the news. Yes, a crowd is gathering around someone on the floor in handcuffs. He turns briefly and stops.

He seems lifeless. The cuffs are quickly removed. Management of the Mall said their security ensured he was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival that afternoon of 30th of January 2023.

Samson’s Take: The curse of leadership in Africa

The UN environment programme tells us what we live and know, that Africa is rich in natural resources ranging from arable land, water, oil, natural gas, minerals, forests and wildlife.

The continent has 40% of the world’s gold and up to 90% of its chromium and platinum.

The largest reserves of cobalt, diamonds, platinum and uranium in the world are in Africa with 65% of the world’s arable land. This means Africa ought to be rich, not the symbol of poverty and underdevelopment.

Samson’s Take: OSP officers fighting corruption on empty stomach?

In November 2020, respected anti-corruption crusader, Martin Amidu, resigned as the Special Prosecutor. In April 2021, Kissi Agyebeng was nominated.

He was vetted for the job by Parliament in July and sworn into office the next month – August 5. He was not paid a salary in 2021, not in 2022, and there is no indication he and his staff will be paid this or the next month or in 2023.
